guys please remember that absolutely anyone is welcome to discover/watch Dead Poets Society. I understand your frustrations, I really do (if it actively doesn’t have anything to do with DPS plz stop using the tag) but we should not be gatekeeping this beautiful film. We should be welcoming people with open arms and teaching them about the beauty of it. I’ve been apart of this fandom for eight years. I’ve seen the highs and the lows. I’ve made posts that have gotten zero traction and posts that have gotten hundreds. We should be using this influx of new people as an opportunity to widen our fandom, not chase them out with torches and pitchforks.

Dead Poets Banner Theory

I thought this was kinda obvious on my second watch, but I haven't seen anyone bring it up yet.

One of the very first shots of the film is the boys bringing out the 4 banners. It is clearly shown that Cameron is carrying tradition, Knox is carrying discipline, Neil, excellence, and Charlie, honour.

These obviously represent their character traits. Cameron is very traditional and rigid, Neil is always put on a high pedestal of excellence, and Knox lacks discipline when it comes to love.

What I find interesting is that when the boys walk out, Charlie is no longer there. Whilst it's probably just a random discrepancy, I'd like to think of it as him losing any remainder of his honour after his expulsion.

Later, they recite the altered four pillars. Cameron, travesty. Nothing goes his way, he's heartbroken. Charlie, horror. Self explanatory. Knox, decadence. He is incredibly self-indulgent and lives for pleasure and romance. Finally, Neil is excrement. I see it as quite simply, when you die your bowels get flushed out. Guess what damn happens to Neil.

Anyways that was all, I'd love to hear some thoughts on it! I have a ton more things I've noticed in a google doc so tell me if you'd like to see them I love analysing things :))

now i was never a particularly big fan of knox but that doesn't make it any less disappointing since dps is a huge comfort movie. but allow me to ease your (and my) grief by shoving an agenda in ur face:
